The Lord of the Rings is a film series consisting of three epic fantasy adventure films directed by Peter Jackson. They are based on the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. The films are subtitled The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003). Considered to be one of the biggest and most ambitious film projects ever undertaken, with an overall budget of $280 million, the entire project took eight years, with the filming for all three films done simultaneously and entirely in New Zealand, Jackson’s native country. Each film in the series also had special extended editions released on DVD a year after their respective theatrical releases. The series was a major financial success, with the films collectively being among the highest-grossing film series of all time.

Moritz, which center on illegal street racing and heists, and various other media portraying the characters and situations from the films. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the series was established with the 2001 film titled The Fast and the Furious; it has since been followed by five sequels, two short films that tie into the series, and a related video game series. Having earned $2.3 billion as of October 22, 2013 at the worldwide box office, it has become Universal Studios’ biggest franchise of all time.

The Bourne films are a series of action/thriller spy films based on the character Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), a CIA assassin suffering from extreme memory loss who must figure out who he is, created by author Robert Ludlum. The Bourne Legacy introduces a new character, Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), a Department of Defense operative who runs for his life because of Bourne’s actions in Ultimatum. All three of Ludlum’s novels were adapted for the screen, featuring Matt Damon as the titular character in each. Doug Liman directed The Bourne Identity , Paul Greengrass directed The Bourne Supremacy  and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Tony Gilroy co-wrote each film and directed The Bourne Legacy . Damon chose not to return for the fourth film. The character of Jason Bourne does not appear in Legacy, but mention of his name and pictures of Damon as Bourne are shown throughout the film. The series is noted for its realism, in contrast to the growing use of computer-generated imagery in the action genre.

The Matrix is a science fiction action media franchise created by Andy and Lana Wachowski and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The series began with the feature film The Matrix (1999), and continued with two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003). The characters and settings of the films are further explored in other media set in the same fictional universe, including animation, comics, and video games. The series features a cyberpunk story incorporating references to numerous philosophical and religious ideas. Other influences include mythology, anime, and Hong Kong action films (particularly “heroic bloodshed” and martial arts movies). Two of the Matrix video games, both supervised by the Wachowskis, are a part of the official chronology. Enter the Matrix, mainly focused on Niobe and Ghost and also written by the Wachowskis, connects the story of the short animated film Final Flight of the Osiris with the events of Reloaded, while The Matrix Online is a direct sequel to Revolutions.

The Godfather is a film series consisting of three feature-length crime films directed by Francis Ford Coppola based upon the novel of the same name by Italian American author Mario Puzo. The first two films of the series were written, filmed, and released just years apart in the 1970s, while the third installment didn’t come out until 1990. They were distributed by Paramount Pictures. The three films follow the fictional Corleone Mafia family through the course of its history in the United States and their homeland Sicily. The early plot line begins with patriarch of the family Vito Corleone’s (Marlon Brando) decline and exit from the family business and the passing over of the control to his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino) who then becomes the major focus of the films. After seizing control, Michael uproots the family from New York and moves out to Las Vegas where he gets involved in a business transaction in the unstable Cuba, which he manages to get out of. Years later, Michael has pulled out of the mafia world and attempts to buy a good reputation through various acts of charity. The series achieved success at the box office, with the films earning over $550 million worldwide. The films were critically acclaimed and the first film, The Godfather, is seen by many as one of the greatest films of all time. The first sequel, The Godfather Part II, is viewed by many as the greatest sequel of all time. The series is heavily awarded, winning 9 out of 29 total Academy Award nominations.
